US New York to offer 100 incentive for vaccination
Starting this Friday, New York City will pay $100 to anyone who goes to a city-run vaccination site for their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, Mayor Bill de Blasio said. The announcement comes just days after the mayor said all city workers would have to be vaccinated or go through strict weekly testing protocols.
The payment is one of a number of vaccine incentives New York City is offering, including subway Metrocards, memberships for cultural attractions, free Shake Shack and a lottery to win stays at local hotels and a $2,500 cash prize.
New York City said Monday that all municipal workers must provide proof of vaccination or submit to weekly Covid-19 tests starting Sept. 13, as the city deals with an increase in infections related to the highly transmissible Delta variant.
The city has struggled to increase inoculation rates, with more than 40% of the total population still unvaccinated. At the same time, the extremely contagious delta variant of COVID-19 is causing a slow but steady surge in coronavirus cases across New York.
The cityâs seven-day average test positivity rate reached 2.55% on Wednesday, the highest in months, while another 108 people were admitted to hospitals for COVID-19, according to Health Department data. More than 9 million doses of the vaccine have been administered in the city. The mayor said over 59 percent of the cityâs population has received at least one Covid-19 shot, but thatâs not enough.
