  • Australia’s airports have warned foreign airlines are at risk of pulling out of Australia even as the country reopens its international border, unless clearer plans are locked in immediately.
  • A three week vaccination blitz targeting Melbourne’s northern and western suburbs will start on Monday amid surging cases, while nationally a new vaccination ad campaign starting today will focus on the freedoms vaccinated Australians will enjoy once 70 and 80 per cent targets are achieved.
  • Sydney’s Uber drivers have revealed how growing numbers of customers are bending the lockdown rules, attending hook-ups, gatherings and cosmetic treatments. But NSW Police says its compliance blitz, netting 22,000 fines in 3.5 weeks, has helped.
  • NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard is standing firm behind plans to require churchgoers to show proof of vaccination when NSW reopens, despite religious leaders pushing for an exemption. But he’s flagged easing more restrictions in outdoor settings before the state reaches the 70 per cent full vaccination target.
  • On Saturday, NSW recorded 1599 new cases of COVID-19 and eight deaths, while Victoria had a big jump in infection numbers with 450 new cases.
  • Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk is confident of containing a new cluster but has warned parts of south-east Queensland may have to go into lockdown within days after five new local cases were reported.
  • The United States is today marking 20 years since the September 11 attacks that felled the World Trade Center towers in New York and left nearly 3,000 innocent people dead, including 10 Australians. Read the stories of some people whose lives were changed forever that morning.
